The Future's Electric

Experience the electric revolution with Rockingham Cars

Ever since 1978 when we first opened our dealership with 4 traditional petrol pumps, which we served for our customers Rockingham Cars team have always strived to offer up to the date advice on new technologies with a keen eye for value.

Charge forwards to 2024 and beyond and the future is one full of electrifying potential, but also lots of myths and questions. Rest assured the Rockingham team are on hand to guide you through the switch to electric. Our brands;  Abarth, Fiat and Mazda are all focusing their efforts to lower C02 emissions and bring new products to the market, making the switch to electric far more affordable and even easier to charge and deliver long driving ranges.

Change Is Coming

Electric vehicles offer zero road tax, zero emissions and cheaper running costs when compared to traditional Petrol and Diesel cars. The UK Government have laid out a clear path to 2030 when ALL NEW CARS sold will have to be electric. Between 2024 and 2030 the number of electric cars is set to grow at an incredible rate. That doesn't mean you wont be able to buy a Petrol car between now and then but time is ticking and the numbers of Petrol cars available for New sale will gradually diminish.

What About Existing Petrol & Diesel Cars?

There will still be the existing legacy fleet of Petrol and Diesel cars on the road and being used after the 2030 ban on selling new versions. We anticipate a strong used car market for the existing vehicles too and already stock a wider range of pre-owned petrol and diesel cars. As with all big changes there will be a tipping point when electric cars are the norm so why not make the switch sooner, it might be better value in the long run.

What About The Range

One the most common concerns of switching to electric is the range a car can do. We live with EV's everyday and are used to traveling both long and short distances daily. Our team can help guide you and talk about our experiences. The range of EV cars increasing all the time, however with average daily use of our customers cars being less than 50 miles per day EV's are ideally suited to most customers daily needs. Two things to consider, firstly treat it a bit like your smartphone........plug it in overnight ready for the next day (when the electricity is cheaper) and secondly very few drivers fill their tanks up with petrol everyday so don't worry about needing a full charge all the time just top the battery up as you need. Plus EV's are full of clever tech to help you know just how far you can go without even leaving your home or office.

How to Charge

The easiest and most cost effective way to charge is to have a home charging point installed. Both Fiat and Mazda have teamed up with national providers to help get a charger installed and in some cases even pay some of the fee's for you. When coupled with a low rate energy tariff an overnight charge often costs a lot less than you might expect. Workplace and Public charging pints are popping up all the time and are only set to grow. It actually really easy and never having to fill up with petrol or use a dirty diesel pump again is one of the joys of being a EV driver.

Are There Enough Chargers?

There's lots of tools and APPs to help you find and book a public charger. If your planning a longer journey these tools really come into their own and when combined with the technology in the car you can travel with peace of mind you'll arrive fresh and with enough charge for your onward journey. It does take some getting used to, but just like anything it soon becomes straight forwards. One tip is to plan your journey, avoid the need to use high cost rapid chargers if possible just like its best to avoid filling up with petrol on a Motorway where the price is always significantly more than average.
